The Rainbow Music Hall: Remembering a Legendary Denver Concert Venue

Hi Leroy - Thanks for taking us to the show-before-the-shows at the Rainbow. I do remember the audience there was rarely kind to opening acts that didn't fit the mold. Glad you came through the whiskey bottle barrage unscathed!

Not only that, our front man left his set list on the stage when we fled after only about 5 songs. Elvin Bishop picked it up and read the titles of our songs to the crowd. They laughed and booed us. In fact, when we started the set, Kenny said, "We're the Jonny 3 from Littleton." Someone immediately yelled "Go back to Littleton." We knew we were in trouble then. But when we had a good fit with the headliners, we did just fine.

My first show at the Rainbow was Men Without Hats opening for The Eurythmics. The first of many great shows I experienced there.

I would sometimes willingly pick up extra shifts at the Winchell's across form the Rainbow. It was the spot band managers escaped to. Met some pretty stressed out people there.

Great times, saw Krokus, Utopia with Todd Rundgren, Randy Hansen Jimi experience, and few others. Awesome venue!

I have fabulous memories from the Rainbow. Moving to Denver in 1978 and adjusting to life as a junior high student in a new big city. Starting with my first concert at 14, when I saw AC/DC on June 29th, 1979... I was blown away seeing Bon Scott and the high energy of Angus, I became a fan for life. Next up on 1/22/1980 was Pat Benatar with the Knack opening. Even though I was in the third row, I never realized that she was less than five feet tall. What a great voice. Then I saw my favorite Rainbow show when Thin Lizzy blew the roof off on 12/17/1980. It was amazing. My last show at the Rainbow was seeing Def Leppard opening for Blackfoot. Another amazing show. The Rainbow Rocked and I saw some of the best bands up close. The days of waiting all day (partying on..) to rush for the best seats. Now I pay hundreds of dollars to sit close (Just saw Roger Waters at the Tacoma Dome in the 9th row). Thank you for writing this history. It takes me back to a time when I personally was spreading my wings.

Hi Adam - Thanks for reading and for the kind words. Those were some very fun days in the old Rainbow Music Hall parking lot and, as was Mr. Fey's intention, there wasn't a bad seat in the house!
