Hi Adam,
In my research, I did not find out about any tampering of the devices. What I surmise, is that Conoco paid fines for not following procedures, but I'm not sure if anyone was fired or held liable within the company. Glad you enjoyed the blog!

I remember watching the blaze from our front room window. It shook the house when it blew up. Our school was on standby for evacuation because there was a chlorine tank close to the main fire. We later learned that one of my dad's co-workers son was killed in the blast. We were also told that it had been ignited by a spark from a welder...

I remember when this happened. I was still sleeping before my first junior year on high school class started that morning. I remember getting awoken by a huge boom and the our house shook. We were probably 6 miles away.
Actually just drove by that refinery this evening.
Thanks for the article brought back the memories

Hi Jeb,

Yes, every time I drive by the refinery I think about what happened. Glad you enjoyed the blog. I'll be writing about more fires in the Denver area soon. All the best,
James

I lived within 2miles of the refinery. There was a fine dust that people breathed in. I'm thinking insulation. I had platelet problems within 6months. Years later I have been diagnosed with scleroderma. My mom's house had cracked all over .

Hi Sheila,
I am sorry to hear about the heath problems the refinery caused. As I understand, the refinery still has environmental problems and issues, especially to the surrounding neighborhood. Hopefully one day, we'll not need the refinery so close to Denver.
All the best,
James
