I worked as a summer hire at the Asamera refinery just across the road from the Conoco plant. On the day of the explosion I was on the way to work when the explosion happened. The cinder block building where 30 men gathered each morning was leveled. A tank at the Asamera refinery was about 100 yards from the blast it was completely full with 6,000,000 gallons of crude oil. The tank was moved 18” off of its foundation but did not rupture. Nobody was injured at the Asamera plant

This is a sobering reminder of how industrial accidents can shape both safety regulations and community awareness. Events like the 1978 Continental Oil refinery explosion underscore the importance of rigorous process safety management, equipment maintenance, and hazard detection systems. Studying these incidents helps engineers and safety professionals prevent similar tragedies while continually improving emergency response and refinery operations.
