Bygone Denver: Harry Hoffman Liquors

I lived in Denver from 1946 until 1958 and Harry Hoffman’s was my dad’s principal supplier of spirits so I knew it well. I was in the same class, 1958, at East High School as Harry’s daughter, Sheila, a very outgoing young lady.

I continued my education in Canada and in the course of my doctoral program, one of my professors of Scottish origin, introduced me to single malt scotch whisky, something of which I have since developed quite a taste, for, particularly for the Speyside whiskies. I was in Denver for a visit in the late 60s and wanted to find a bottle of Glenlivet to give to friends and tried all over Denver to find it without success until it came to mind to try Harry’s. I asked perchance if they had heard of Glenlivet and was asked if I wanted the 12 or 18 year old and by the way, if I liked Speyside whiskies, had I ever tried Mortlach which today is my absolute favourite?

I have been around the world more than once and have never encountered an emporium comparable to Harry Hoffman’s in terms of selection AND service. It’s truly sad that it disappeared from the Denver scene.
