The Yampa Valley, the Little Train that Couldn’t

Hi James,

My father purchased some property outside of Steamboat in the late '50s. As an eleven or twelve year old, I road the YVM solo from Denver to Steamboat. I remember being a little scared in the Moffett tunnel, but otherwise loved it. Within a couple of years, Dad had moved the family to Steamboat so I never got to ride it again. Just considering the traffic east bound on I-70 on a winter Sunday afternoon (best described as a parking lot), I would think the ski resorts themselves would push to get this train back in service.
Thanks for bring back some memories.

Hi Thomas,

Glad you had a good trip down memory lane! I wish I could have ridden the train, but I loved writing about it and it seems to put a smile on people's faces. Hopefully soon, someone will wake up and take leadership to bring the train back up to Steamboat!

All the best,
James

My dad worked for the DRGW, so we had free passes for the train. We often took it East Portal for picnics, catching the eastbound home to Denver in the afternoon. In winter, we took it to Winter Park for ski lessons, or, more frequently, to Lake Pactolus, just east of Rollinsville, to ice skate. Great fun!
