Here at DPL’s Western History/Genealogy Department (Level 5, Central Library), we frequently help customers who are experiencing strange (possibly paranormal?) phenomena in their Denver homes.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, we can help you find the answer to one of our most frequently-asked questions: who lived in my house?
To get started, you’ll want to check out the “Who Lived In My House?” section of our Denver Building History Tutorial page. Here, you’ll be guided to ownership and occupancy records found in householder directories, city directories, assessor records, and the federal census (BONUS: many of these records have been digitized!).
The records mentioned above will provide pretty basic biographical information on former residents. (The Federal Census, for example, provides occupation information).
Seeking more? Sources of rich biographical information include death-related records like published obituaries as well as funeral and mortuary records. Visit our excellent Obituaries, Cemeteries & The Dead guide to learn more about accessing a bevy of death records.
