Special Collections

Tenth Mountain Division troops fill the entire frame, except for a small triangle of water in the upper right corner; troops are returning by ship to the U.S.A. All are in uniform, most wear helmets and some wear life vests. Some are reading, some resting, others look out to sea.

Jim "Wyoming" Penton, a member of the 10th Mountain Division 87th Regiment Service Company (SVC), stands on a bluff over Broad Beach on Kiska Island in Alaska; U.S. and British flags are nearby. The 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment was in the Aleutians as a part of Amphibious Task Force 9. Boats and amphibious vehicles are in the water in the distance.

John D. Magrath, a member of the 10th Mountain Division 85th Regiment, Company G and a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, poses outdoors with skis and poles at Camp Hale (Eagle County), Colorado. He wears a backpack with rifle, jacket, and mittens.

John W. Haines, III, of Company I, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, Tenth Mountain Division, faces the camera and smiles with a cigarette in his mouth and a rifle on his back. Behind him are the ruins and rubble of Pietra Colora. Haines was later killed in action.
