As the saying goes, this isn't our first rodeo.
The National Western Stock Show has been a January tradition in Denver since 1906. DPL's Western History and Genealogy Department (WHG) has collected many items from the Show over the years, including photographs, programs, scrapbooks, oral histories and newspaper articles.
We're featuring a souvenir program from 1933 which contains many interesting tidbits inside its bold, Art Deco cover. Curious about the lingo of cowpokes? Turn to page 41 to learn about terms like "cattaloe" (buffalo crossed with cattle) and "grabbing the apple" (when a bronco rider grabs the horn of a saddle to keep from being thrown).
Wonder which refreshments were offered to Show-goers back in 1933? Of course there was the usual fare of hot dogs, hamburgers, and lemonade, but also honey-coated popcorn, steins of root beer, and "crispelettes" (small apple crisps? potato chips?).
