On Veterans Day in 2005 the Rocky Mountain News introduced a heart-wrenching photo essay called Final Salute with these words: "Rocky Mountain News reporter Jim Sheeler and photographer Todd Heisler spent the past year with the Marines stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora who have found themselves called upon to notify families of the deaths of their sons in Iraq." In 2006 this moving essay and the corresponding photography won Sheeler and Heisler, respectively, Pulitzer Prizes for Feature Writing and Feature Photography.
