Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, the capitol was constructed in the 1890’s and in 1908 the dome was plated with 24-karat gold. The building is composed of rose onyx that was quarried in the town of Beulah, Colorado. The capitol is built in the neoclassical style similar to the capitol building in Washington D.C. The building rests one mile above sea level and is marked on the 13th step.
