Wow ~ Let's hear it for creative highway engineers - it would have been much easier to just blast this lava dike out of existence as contemporary road builders would probably do, but the shapers of this Colorado road decided to get creative and make a really short tunnel - or is it just an arch? Our Digital Collections contain a rich supply of photographs of Colorado roads, bridges, tunnels and highways, from the original wagon trail through Glenwood Canyon to the ribbons of I-70 sweeping across the Rockies, with lots of images of construction, finished projects, and the inevitable road damage that arises in weather-rich Colorado.
