The Juanita Gray Community Service Awards honors African American men, women, and youth who make outstanding contributions to the Denver metro area and who exemplify the ideals and spirit represented by Juanita Gray’s commitment to the Denver community. The biennial Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame is bestowed upon a Coloradan who has been the first African American to accomplish a professional goal or to have been a pioneer in their field while actively supporting the African American community. The award was established in 1973 with the induction of 41 inductees as part of a cooperative venture for Black Awareness Month between the Denver Public Library and Denver Public Schools.
Awards Criteria:
Previous recipients of the award
Juanita Gray Community Service Award
- An African American, a Colorado resident and a positive role model.
- A user and/or supporter of the Denver Public Library.
- A person who has taken an active role in the community.
- A person who has made a contribution above and beyond paid employment.
- A person who has made an impact in the community, state, and/or USA.
- Nominee must be living.
Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame Induction
- Be an African American and Colorado resident.
- Be a pioneer in their field or have made a major impact in the city, state, country or the world at-large.

Please join us for the annual Juanita Gray Community Service Awards and biennial Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. The library will honor African American leaders who make outstanding contributions to our community.
