While on a sabbatical in New Mexico, book artist Philip Zimmermann’s attention was brought to the crossing of Mexican residents across the border into the USA. Witnessing a particular attempted crossing, and subsequent arrest by the Border Patrol, Zimmermann’s thoughts drifted to the lives of the individuals involved, as he wondered about their experiences, motivation, goals, and so on. His book, Sanctus Sonorensis, part of the Douglas Fine Print Collection in WH/G, is a board book; remember the ones you had as a kid? And features gilded page edges (which Zimmermann refers to as “bling”), beautiful imagery, and a text that reads like a beatitute or prayer, inspiring personal investigation into the idea of immigration in the USA. You can read more about the book here. Stop by the WH/G department to see it!
