2012 Map Fair of the West to be held in conjunction with free lectures and exhibition at the Denver Public Library, July 28-29

The Map Fair of The West presented by the Rocky Mountain Map Society will be held Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Denver Central Library (Broadway x 14th). In conjunction with the fair, the Library will also be hosting a series of free lectures about the West and will have a special exhibition, highlighting pieces from Denver Public Library’s vast collection.

This year’s Map Fair of the West will feature eighteen international antiquarian map dealers from all over the world, exhibiting over ten thousand rare, authentic antique maps. For a $10 admission fee, visitors will be able to see beautiful, historically significant maps from the last five centuries, all available for examination and purchase. The event is not only a map collector’s paradise, but is also perfect for anyone interested in history or many magnificent examples of the printer’s art as decor. Dealer specialties will range from stunning early decorative maps of the Golden Age of Cartography and earlier, to pictorial maps of the twentieth century. Some of the most unique finds at the fair will include maps from the dawn of printing, depictions of the discovery and exploration of the new world as it occurred, the evolution of knowledge of the American West, ghost towns, gold rush, kitschy souvenir maps,  and much more. The public is invited to bring in a map or two of their own to obtain an expert opinion.
