Great new book...Gathering Conifer’s Stories Project: Collected Creative Essays
The notion to “gather” the stories in Gathering Conifer’s Stories Project: Collected Creative Essays, came while hiking an old-growth grove of Vermont Hemlock, with a Mr. Elder and a Ms. Randall. Mr. Frank Reetz, editor and publisher of Gathering, is a recent graduate of Middlebury’s (VT) Bread Loaf School of English, and currently facilitates programming for 7th and 8th Grade gifted students of English in Jefferson County Public Schools. A leaning toward story-telling is evident, too, in his own book of narrative/dramatic poetry recently published which, along with Gathering Conifer’s Stories Project, is inspired further by the dramatic narrative of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. Gathering includes photographs of nine elder story-tellers, the gathering youth, a teacher’s rationale, and an unusual cover which wants to convey the difficulty of accurately filtering a community’s oral tradition. Finally, Reetz makes a call for young writers, like Homer in his time, to “be bold” in their own contribution to any form of literary canon.
