10th Mountain Division Newspapers now Online

10th Mountain Division newspapers added to the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection

Through the generosity of the Eagle Valley Library District, The Ski-Zette and Blizzard newspapers, unique United States Army publications from World War II, are now available online to researchers around the world through the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection (CHNC), a free online service of the Colorado State Library.

“The Eagle Valley Library District is thrilled to see the 10th Mountain Division papers available to the world.  The 10th Mountain Division and Camp Hale are our ‘local history’ ,” said Jaci Spuhler of the Eagle Valley Library District archives. “These papers will bring back so many memories to the residents of Eagle County who participated in the War effort.  Our thanks go to the U.S. Army and the Colorado Virtual Library for partnering in this digitization project.”

Dennis Hagen, 10th Mountain Division Archivist at the Denver Public Library added, "The 10th Mountain Division's incredible accomplishments during World War II have been well documented in countless books and articles. The extensive and intensive mountain and winter warfare training that prepared the Division for battle is much less well known.  The Camp Hale Ski-Zette and The Blizzard provide a valuable window into what life was like for young military men preparing to go to war and a unique perspective on brief moment in Colorado's history that is probably not available anywhere else."

The Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection is a collaborative service of the Colorado State Library (Colorado Department of Education), History Colorado, the Colorado State Archive, and libraries and museums around Colorado.  The Eagle Valley Library District provided funds to make this collection available free to the public.

Microfilm from both the Colorado State Archive and the Denver Public Library was utilized for this round of digitization, and the Denver Public Library graciously allowed the service to film original copies of the 10th Mountain Division Ski-Zette held in their collection.
