I very much enjoyed the article on Mart Watrous, of whom I have a historical connection, through my great-grandfather Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith. Watrous and his establishments are mentioned throughout my book, Alias Soapy Smith: The Life and Death of a Scoundrel, perhaps the most important, being a witness of the 1892 shooting death of gambler Cliff Sparks inside The Exchange, a famed Denver gambling den. Soapy was a prime suspect but no one was ever tried and sentenced.
Watrous later signed a bond for Soapy when the latter attacked the Arcade saloon proprietor John Hughes in 1895.
I and my family are proud keepers of several letters to Soapy from Mart Watrous.
